Health and Ageing

People from all around the world are now living longer. A longer life means time spent more with loved ones or pursuing new activities but the extent of this opportunity depends on the one important factor: health.

Older age is categorised by the emergence of several complex health conditions or better known as geriatric syndromes. Although certain medical conditions are genetic, much is due to their physical and social environment. While some 70-year-olds enjoy extremely good health and functioning, other 70-year-olds are frail and require significant help from others. Hence, it is important to keep a healthy and balanced lifestyle from a young age in order to avoid developing geriatric syndromes.

At Woodrose Senior Residences, we help Elders navigate the effects of ageing more effectively through our top-notch services and facilities. For more information, visit www.woodrose.com.my

Who monitors your parents while you work?

As our parents get older, they may require more care than we realise. Having unattended elderly parents at home can be worrying, but that’s the reality of working adults today. Some even resort to hiring domestic helpers who aren’t properly trained in handling elders with geriatric conditions.

Elders who suffer from dementia, Alzheimer’s or any related geriatric syndromes are not capable of taking care of themselves. They need an extra hand to help them around, as well as assist them in handling day-to-day activities to improve their conditions.

Some children can afford to leave their jobs and take care of their parents, but what about those who can’t? Even then, the ones who do assist their elderly parents might not even know how to properly care for them. Having the latest technology that allows you to monitor your parents at home, may not be helpful for the situation either as these may require a capable person who’s available to assist them.

The best option is to send your parents to an elder care centre. Look for reputable Elderly Homes and research the facilities, activities as well as the staff. With the right facilities, carers and doctors, your parents will be able to thrive and flourish in an environment of warmth and kindness.

Struggles of caring for elders

Struggles of caring for elders

As we grow older, our parents do too. The people who used to care for us when we were little, now require care themselves and most of the time we struggle as we attempt to provide whatever they want without knowing what they actually need. It gets even more challenging when their frail state is overcome by certain geriatric conditions like dementia or Alzheimer’s.

Getting a domestic helper with no background or experience in handling elders with special conditions isn’t the right choice either. As clueless as we are in caring for our elders, they would be too. Our elder’s condition might even worsen without the right care and nutrition, and that would worry us more.

Hence, proper care is essential to cater to elders differing to their condition. Professional carers are more eligible to take on the position of caring for elders with geriatric conditions as they would know how to assist them better.

It’s crucial for us to change the Asian community Taboo of sending our elders to a care centre. Elders, with geriatric conditions especially, require the right amount of care, nutrition and activity to help stimulate their brain in order to perform everyday tasks and interaction.

If you have parents or elders who suffer from geriatric conditions, please think about sending them to a care centre to help them better.

Consider reviewing retirement age, says expert

KUALA LUMPUR: The government should consider reviewing the retirement age, which is now 60, to prepare for an ageing population.

Associate Professor Dr Mohd Awang Idris

Psychologist Associate Professor Dr Mohd Awang Idris, however, said consideration should be given to providing more career opportunities to prevent issues like job scarcity among the younger generation.

“Even though the elderly are allowed to work past the retirement age, they could be allowed to work for limited hours in a week, for instance.

“An ageing society is a concern not only in Malaysia, but many countries in the world.

“With an average life expectancy of 76 in Malaysia, many people are susceptible to health issues common among the elderly, like dementia and Alzheimer’s,” said the lecturer at Universiti Malaya’s Department of Anthropology and Sociology.

He said studies had found links between retirement and cognitive decline.

How do Elders maintain their oral health care? Dr Meera Asokan, our very own Dental Surgeon, had a productive teaching session with our elders last Sunday.

The session started at 9 and ended at 10.30 that same morning. Throughout the session, Dr Meera emphasised on the importance of oral health care and showed the carers how to properly clean dentures. She also demonstrated to the carers the correct brushing method for Elders’ teeth.

Dr Meera also shared some very important steps for Elders to maintain oral health with the following materials:

  • Soft/Electric toothbrush
  • Fluoridated toothpaste
  • Tongue cleaner
  • Floss/Water Flosser
  • Mouthrinse

Other materials (if needed) include:

  • Handle modifications for toothbrush
  • Interdental brush
  • Mouth props
  • Floss holders
  • Tooth mousse
  • Polident (for denture wearers)

The session continued with points on what to spot during routine oral hygiene care and concluded with advice about the importance of keeping a good oral health especially for Elders.
